Access 2007 FAQ

The Access 2007 Home ribbon does not show the Window group on my application. How do I enable this feature?

Access 2007 introduces a new interface model for the application window called Single-Document Interface (SDI). In the SDI model, all objects open in a series of tabs across along the top of the object window to the right of the new Navigation Pane. The default interface model for databases created in Access 2007 is the tabbed document interface. If you'd like to use the overlapping windows Multi-Document Interface (MDI) with your application instead of the SDI model, you can change this behavior in the Access Options. (You can only use one interface model at a time; never both).

Click the Microsoft Office Button in the upper left corner of the application window and then click the Access Options button at the bottom right corner of the Office menu, as seen in the following screenshot.

On the Access Options dialog box, first select the Current Database category on the left side. Next, under Document Window Options near the top of the form, select the option called Overlapping Windows, as seen in the following screenshot.

Click the OK button to save your changes. Access prompts you with a message box indicating you'll need to close and reopen the database for the change to take effect, as seen below. Click OK, close your database, and then reopen it.

You should now see a new group on the Home tab called Window, as seen in the following screenshot. If you click the Switch Windows button in this group, Access displays four options - Arrange Icons, Tile Vertically, Cascade, and Tile Horizontally.

Your database objects should now open in their own separate windows.
